And who ever said there is no Pizza Delivery in Suva?
Last night we had a strong pizza craving and I had a strong craving to stay in my jammies and not touch the car keys again … so I asked around if maybe in the last 2 years something had evolved … and see .. James sent me a scan of a service which recently opened in Nasinu … Nasinu is about 15-20 minutes by car (one way, at good weather and no police road blocks) .. so .. no wonder that for a 15$ pizza they want to ‘just’ add 7$ delivery charge. Feast your eyes on the menu .. and after that tell me if you have found what is missing on this menu (besides maybe your personal favorite pizza)

(click for big, but you will still not find what you are looking for … )
What do all delivery pizza places in common??? Or delivery services in general? A FRIGGIN PHONENUMBER !!! what is wrong with those people? They print a nice shiny 4 color flyer .. and there is no phonenumber? According to some investigation Jon did, they do not even have a phone!
Ok, next contestent. I had pizza from Pizza King before and it is pretty ok. So, since I was running out of options (and someone was certain that the new ‘pizzaman’ at sports city mall was already open, which it was not) I ended up driving to Pizza King, only to find out that they do indeed deliver .. for 3$ charge, and they have an extensive menu, and it seems they share the whole thing with some other eateries around … which sounds nice .. sure worth a try … and guess what .. they DO have a phonenumber! Several!

(click for big and to see what’s on the menu)
I had to wait like 20 minutes for the 2 pizzas I ordered. A hawaii and a seafood … and they were both pretty nice … they also have some specials which are not on the printed menu … seems that spicy lamb sausage is very hip right now.
This will change as soon as he starts walking around .. but until then … look at how tasty these feet look!!! A bit of BBQ sauce on them … and then ,… or rather not. Julius is his grumpy, teething self these days so getting a good smile out of him is a bit tricky.

Since he started turning we find him in new cute sleeping positions … WHEN he is sleeping … last night he was a royal crumpy pants pain in the rear end once more and his mom has already enough to suffer under ear pain and bad back … and he is probably teething already.

That was a new one: We all kinda woke up because we noticed mosquitos around … and why did the ceiling fan stop? Turns out the power was out once again and changing diapers in candle light is oh so romantic. Julius liked it so much that he did not intend to go back to sleep, so I stayed up with him and after some very audible bowl movement I felt that his new diaper filling had leaked all over my PJ pants. Great.
At least I could go online for one hour, and when the laptop battery was about to die, power came back on.
More later .. but here the whole toberua story .. and why oh why did they change the dress code? I think all Fijian girls should be required to expose the right breast … then again .. maybe not … gravity can be fairly evil

(click for big, and to actually be able to read the story)
Ok, some more details about this Sunday:
Sunday Breakfast again at the bure, poached / scrambled eggs. I found poached eggs to be much better than boiled ones .. the boiled ones come SO HOT that peeling them is virtualy impossible.

Lunch: Something with smoked marlin, followed by parmesan crusted pakapaka filet surrounded by tons of veggies (alt: ham/pinapple salad or efttucine), selfsaucing chocolate pudding which is on the far end of the evil scale and is probably outlawed in several countries. Very addictive.

Not one of the best pics, but at least some idea of how our bure meals looked like .. and you can play ‘spot the baby’ in this pic.
The rest of the day we spent with the usual, being lazy, keeping the little tyke happy, nap a bit, pay the bill … and then hop on the boat and return home.
2 early morning strolls with Julius. Weather was not too great, but at least not raining. We found a lonely soul in the kitchen baking rolls. And then we explored all the jetties.

We started breakfast at the dining bure, but then moved to our own since Julius got very antsy. We discovered that having breakfast delivered to the bure is very nice indeed .. we got extra fruit and better tea and thanks to the wind it was much nicer in terms of temperature.
morning tea: kinda weird for that time of day: lamb sausage in a blanket, but actually very nice.
lunch:
there was some appetizer, but I totally forgot.
main: walu filet, beef mousaka or sandwich .. we took the fish which came with very fresh ota (a local vegetable) which was fantastic.
caramel flan (evil)
at bure again, much nicer, again
afternoon, Ritsu with Julius visiting Keiko and Zach while I was recovering from a mild mental breakdown because I lost one day’s video footage.
Later we were watching guests and staff playing vollyball. And I kept wondering how often they need to replace the windows of the bures close to the volleyball court. I have some nice footage of that game … who knows when I will have time to edit that.
Then it was time for R&J to take a nap and I went to have wine with Keiko, Zach and their Japanese friends.

New: Pre-dinner meke entertainment. Best meke ever, maybe not in terms of technical finesse, but sure in enthusiasm and fun. Especially wound up was a little 5 year old boy who was totally into it.

Followed up by the mandatory, guest involving, snake line .. which in Toberua, thanks to the sea snakes, has a whole new meaning

Dinner: indoor BBQ (thanks to weather) .. seafood appetizers now served in big shells. My favorite, the crab vakamiti, was nearly gone. Without labels it was a bit hard to see what is what … I think the other thing I got was sea cucumber … I have no problems with the taste, it was just too chewy.

Very yummy. BBQ good as ever. I stayed with pork and beef… i think there was also sausage, chicken and fish … i noticed, after having been extremely pampered the last 2 times, there was no prawn or lobster.
For desert we return to the bure (after a last dance with his favorite girl: mommy!) as J was getting grumpy.

By now i have lost any threshold about invading the kitchen area .. something I usually highly respect (just as I hate people going behind a bar) … but starting with Julius wanting to explore .. then later just to comunicate with the kitchen staff faster … everyone knows us by name (even some of the meke people greeted me ‘hey, you must be Peter’)
Dead tired and happy, the whole nacken family goes to bed.

Lazy saturday afternoon on our porch of our bure ‘Wakaya’ at Toberua
Once again we traveled to Toberua Island for the weekend. It appeared that this weekend the island was mainly occupied by local weekenders and quite many of them Japanese.

Ritsu is having a Toberua Prince while gazing at the beautiful full moon

Dinner was:
Seafood val au vent (very creamy … maybe too creamy, then again, I did not have the chance to eat it hot, as one of us had to walk around with Julius)
Brown onion soup
Choice of lamb with veggies or fettucine something something (we both had lamb)
Fijian plantan desert
After that we were quick in going to bed.
Super Secret Agent Julius Nacken on a mission!

He looks really good in orange on our orange couch, which gives the term ‘orange julius’ a whole new meaning.
Major Milestone in baby development … but we have no video of it .. which is kinda weird … but he turned from laying on his back to laying on his tummy … which means now we have to double up on taking care where he could roll too.!!!
I wish I could have that cam on all the time, then again I would always have to consider what I am wearing (if at all)

SO last night we had people over to celebrate thanksgiving. The guestlist kept changing back and forth but it turned out to be a fun bunch of people…

Here we have Jonathan kidnapping our son. I just notice that his hair is not that full anymore too .. man, we are getting old.

And this is the food: Turkey / Pumpkin / Bacon skewers which I managed to get a bit to dark, even though i was refraining from using the grill. The turkey had soaked for 2 days in a marinade of butter and cranberries … I think it may have turned out a bit dry. Same goes for the chicken satay skewers. Then there is a load of stuffing .. I had a long discussion about stuffing with Ritsu, how come it is not in the bird? Why do so many people make extra stuffing? What? it is based on bread? Then next we have a nice batch of garlic mashed potatoes and of course gravy. cranberry jelly and corncobs and Farsana brought those Indian fish balls … Oh .. and the huge portion of fresh coleslaw somehow remained hidden and forgotten in the fridge … bummer …

Everybody eating.
These too pics below are just great … the 2 infants discovering each other and interact:

Thanksgiving is not being observed here at all, but a small batch of turkeys is available, though hopelessly overprized. Last year we decided against it, because rumor had it that the turkey was over 3 years old and had lived a long after life in several freezers and over several power outtages, instead we were invited by friends. Anyways, I have been cooking up a storm and in about half hour our guests shall arrive and I still have to figure out how to disect this bird.

I thought I was joking when I said that we could make money selling breastmilk on ebay …. and sure enough, this was not a new idea … check out this auction. I am inclinded to ask the seller some question, as to shipping, proof of source and such
update: Maybe not a joke? I asked the seller:
“How are you planning on doing the worldwide shipping? How will it keep fresh?”
And her reply was:
deep freeze before hand, as soon as its cooled from expressing. well wrap, put a frozen cooler bar with it. Then inquire at post office the fastest method of delivery. obviously go down near the times they’re due to start delivering, so the package is sitting around for ages. the cooler bars i have are slow defrosting, and on Worldwide shipping would be included with the item and shipping cost. Bubble wrap packaging, to obviously decreases any wetness from the cooler. Hope that answers query.

amazing how long he slept last night .. from 8 PM to 4:30 AM !!! yeah !!! amazing .. we can call that ‘all through the night’ .. score …
We fear though that he might start theething a bit early … yeah ..
What a fun day today … first when driving him for morning tea, car acts up … probably just low on fuel … i guess since we are doing a lot of driving around the block for parking these days, I cannot trust the “how much distance with this tank” display anymore … anyways .. good thing I have Bobby on my cell phone and he was helpful as ever .. drove me to Ritsu, got me a gallon of fuel, drove me back … all fine now …
Then later during the day the power went off pretty much half of the whole country … yeah … funny that i could still be online and talk to some others in Fiji who had the power out too. It was so severe that Ritsu’s office was closed and she came back home early … which brings us to this picture:

She was playing ‘tummy time’ with him .. and he is getting SO STRONG in his neck muslces and we expect him to be able to turn over very soon … (no pressure my son! ) …
Second night in a row he slept from 9PM to 4AM ,,, and then it is diaper change and getting food and then hanging out wihth daddy in his office for a while and then back to bed .. and around 6 AM when daddy wants to go back to bed, it is time for the nacken family to wake up.
So.. i took him for a walk to get breadrolls ..

Sorry, but I was laughing my tiny behind off when I saw that .. i guess being a toy collector must really suck when in Fiji …

and NO .. i was NOT at mcdonalds .. and i did NOT have a bigmac !!!
And this fresh in from one of our spies … from Island Business Magazine
Leading by example: In October, members of parliament from 16 Pacific islands countries got a trip to Suva to sit for three days at a heavily United Nations-sponsored conference at which lots of experts urged them to take the lead in their country in impressing on their people the need to avoid HIV/AIDS, how to avoid it, and how to live with it having failed to avoid it; also how to live kindly with people who have failed to avoid it.
Confident behind-the-scenes predictions were made that some of the MPs would be anxious to embark quickly on hands-on front-line research on the subject since Suva is a perfect ground for it.
One extra diligent MP picked up three whores and after disporting with one of them in his hotel room shower emerged to find that the other two had left with his valuables. His shower mate is said to have made off with the balance.
Disheartened by the cost of his social research, he informed the police of his woes but then had second thoughts and sensibly decided not to take the matter further.
