The prime minister of Ethiopia is dead.

Sad news for the country.

There has been an 8 week rumor mill about the status and the whereabouts of Meles Zenawi, who has been leading the country since 1991.

A lot of articles I tried to read when googling for ‘where is Meles’ had been blocked by the country’s monopolistic and state controlled ISP, the official state TV information was ‘he had a minor illness and is now recovering’. But there have also been rumors that the PM has passed on already many weeks ago.

One article I managed to read about a week ago from the Guardian, UK said interestingly “The death of president John Atta Mills in Ghana last month led to a rare broadcast on Ethiopian state TV on how to mourn the death of a leader, which has also fuelled speculation that Meles’s health may be further deteriorating. It is not the first time that an African government has failed to confirm the illness or death of a leader in office, prompting periods of mysterious absence.

Today it has been made official (BBC / Reuters) that he has passed away. The circumstances / timeline might still contain a few questions. But most important for us and the country is that / if the daily life will go on stable or if there will be some interruptions / distortions. We have to wait and see.

Disclaimer: I am aware that the internet here is highly monitored and I want to make it clear to anyone who reads this that I do not have any political agenda here and that my knowledge of the overall political situation in this country is quite limited. I continue to wish the best for this country and the people of Ethiopa.
